Van Aanholt begs Stoke after sending them to relegation

Crystal Palace defender Patrick Van Aanholt this afternoon took to Twitter to send an apology message to Stoke City’s fanbase after his goal condemned the Potters to the Championship.

The Potters came into this game needing to win and got the good fortune that every relegation battler needs when Ruben Loftus-Cheek deflected home Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick before the break.

McArthur pulled the Eagles level with an excellent drilled finish into the bottom-right corner of Jack Butland’s goal in the 68th-minute, following a perfectly-weighted pass from Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Van Aanholt’s strike also ended any remaining hopes that Stoke maintained of keeping their place in the top-tier of English football, with the Dutch full-back has since taken to Twitter to send his commiserations to the Potters’ faithful, labeling Stoke ‘a great club with great fans.

Normally I like to celebrate when I score but I’d like to apologise to Stoke City and their fans, I wish my goal didn’t relegate you, but you’ll be back soon! Great club with great fans 👊🏽
